For the third time, Butoh Batorū is bringing the Japanese form of dance theater into a club setting and giving it an international edge. Soundtracking the majority of the night will be a joint set between Magna Pia and Amanda Mussi. The former, also known as Hüseyin Evirgen, has released on labels such as Counterchange, Soma and Feral Note, combining contemporary techno music with archaic symbolism; the latter brings her Brazilian and Paraguayan roots onto the dancefloor with tribalistic percussion, layered vocals and soundscapes that move between the earthly and the galactic. Among the eight dancers are Otomo de Manuel, a major figure of French subculture, and Netherlands-based Qiyun Zheng, whose practice-led research explores the contorting body as a symbol of entangled identities. While Butoh Batorū is based on performance, it ends as a collective state in which the boundary between audience and artists disintegrates.
BATORU begins with performance.
It ends as a collective state. Artists open the space, but the event is completed by those who enter it. What starts as a program gradually transforms into a living composition of bodies, gestures, encounters, and unexpected participation. There is no audience and no protagonist. Only a temporary situation that exists for one night and can never be repeated in the same way twice.
