Ten years of Reef add up to a remarkable run for an event series with a nonstop focus on the intersections between UK bass, IDM and techno – and of course this anniversary party is going to reflect that. Irish artist Dominik Martin aka Calibre is widely regarded as the architect of modern drum & bass. His approach is defined by a musical minimalism that leaves room for melody without sacrificing the functional intensity of the sub-bass. His 24 albums span genres from drum & bass to dub, techno, house, ambient, jazz, soul and blues. As one of the pioneers of footwork, Kavain Space aka RP Boo brings a distinct Chicago energy to the mix. His productions are often stark, repetitive and marked by a nearly surgical precision in their use of samples. Dangermami is the founder of Femme Bass Mafia and a resident DJ at Refugee Worldwide; her preference is for mixes enriched with psychedelic sounds ranging from 140 to 170 bpm. However, the anniversary comes with down note: After a decade that began at Griessmühle and found a new home at Berghain in 2021, the series will be discontinued later this year after just three more editions. The freed-up resources will increasingly flow into Darwin’s label Biofield Records as well as the sound system project ABYSS.
