Secret Life of Machines is the title of the fabulous first album by Sterac, the Detroit techno alias of Amsterdam DJ/producer Steve Rachmad, which he released almost 30 years ago on the Dutch label 100% Pure. Back in 1968, long before AI, the writer Philip K. Dick was already exploring the philosophical question of whether androids dream of electric sheep. The answer remains unclear, but at least the concept of an empathic machine guided by its own feelings worked very well on Rachmad's debut. This certain mechanical funk, carried by an almost meditative melancholy, can still be found in his productions today. Sterac is playing on the Berghain for this edition of Klubnacht. The Paradox in Me, Terrence Fixmer's second album for Mute Records, was released this past summer, which he is now following with a live set of tight, EBM-influenced techno, also in Berghain. Finally, South Africa's Alan Abrahams aka Portable welcomes you to a Sunday concert in Säule with his profound love songs, edgy sci-fi broken beats and piano-heavy house anthems.
