KOMETENMELODIEN 9: BARN OWL

»Lost In The Glare« ist Barn Owls zweites Album für Thrill Jockey und schließt faktisch nahtlos an die kongeniale Shadowland EP an. Beide Veröffentlichungen wurden live-to-tape im Studio von Phil Manley in San Francisco aufgenommen und beide haben als treibendes Merkmal die duellierenden Gitarren-Sounds der beiden Barn Owl-Protagonisten Caminiti und Porras. Während die Veröffentlichungen der Vergangenheit jedoch mit Harmonium Klängen glänzten, unterfüttert hier eine Farfisa Orgel die Gitarrenspiralen sowie eine Bassklarinette (Portraits Steve Dye), Gong (Michael Elrod von. u.a. Date Palms) und nicht zu verschweigen das unglaubliche Schlagzeugspiel von Jacob Felix Heule, der mit fast brutalem Punch den Tracks eine geradezu schamanische Note verleiht. Auf dem gesamten Album lässt sich die tonal kongenial umgesetzte Hitze der Sahara ebenso spüren wie die Eiseskälte des Weltraums. Barn Owl gelten nicht umsonst als eine der herausragendsten Bands der kontemporären Drone-Szene, die hinter deren Anführern Sunn0))) und Earth noch lange nicht zuende ist. Both releases have been recorded live-to-tape at Phil Manley’s studio in San Francisco, and both show the duelling guitar sounds of Barn Owl musicians Caminiti and Porras as their salient attribute. While one could hear a harmonium in Barn Owl’s past discography, they are now using a farfisa organ alongside their spiral sounding guitar plays and the bass clarinet (»Portraits’ Steve Dye«). Not to mention Jacob Felix Heule’s furious drumming – his brutal punch adds a kind of shamanic touch to their tracks. »Lost In The Galore« itself sounds like the heat of the Sahara desert as well as the freezing bleakness of outer space – which is why Barn Owl is one of the most finest examples of contemporary drone music.
